During Wasco County 2040, community members expressed the need for solutions to help improve housing availability and affordability. One identified strategy that had some public support was to look at putting in place rules for short term or vacation rentals of homes that might otherwise be available for long term rental. Short term rental is usually defined as a stay less than 30 days and includes rental through popular sites like AirBnB and VRBO.

Potential regulations might include noise or nuisance considerations to reduce impact to neighbors . Regardless of whether we choose to restrict short term rentals or not, we will need to either insert into residential zones as a permitted uses or identify a business licensing program to allow in residential zones. Its important to note that short term rentals are not allowed in farm or forest zones in Oregon.
